UTV Ride Height — Why It Drops and How to Fix It

If your UTV sits noticeably lower than it did when it was new — or lower than the same model looks at the dealership — your ride height has dropped. This is one of the most common complaints from UTV owners with any miles on their machine, and it's almost always caused by the same thing: sagging factory springs.

Here's everything you need to know about why UTV ride height drops, what it affects, and exactly how to fix it.

Why Does UTV Ride Height Drop?

Spring Sag

Every spring has a natural rate at which it sags over time — losing both its free length and its spring rate under repeated compression cycles. Factory UTV springs are particularly prone to this because they're manufactured to a price point, not to a premium spring specification. Most factory UTV springs show noticeable sag within 300-600 miles of riding, especially under load.

Added Weight

Every pound you add to your UTV increases the load on your springs. Bumpers, cage reinforcement, spare tires, audio systems, and roof panels all add static weight that the factory springs weren't designed to support. The result is the suspension sitting deeper in its travel at rest — lower ride height.

Arizona Heat

For Arizona riders specifically, extreme summer heat accelerates spring sag. Springs exposed to sustained high temperatures lose their free length faster than springs in cooler climates. Why Ride Height Matters

Lost ride height isn't just cosmetic — it affects almost every aspect of how your UTV performs:

  • Less suspension travel — if your suspension starts lower at rest, it has less travel available before bottoming. A UTV that's dropped 3 inches has effectively lost 3 inches of suspension travel on every hit.
  • Changed suspension geometry — most UTV suspension geometry is optimized for a specific ride height. When ride height drops, camber, toe, and control arm angles all change — affecting handling and tire wear.
  • Reduced ground clearance — lower ride height means less clearance under the chassis for rocks, terrain obstacles, and rough ground.
  • Increased bottoming — less travel plus changed geometry means your suspension bottoms out on impacts that wouldn't have been a problem when the machine was new.

How to Measure If You've Lost Ride Height

The easiest way to check ride height loss is to measure your exposed shock shaft — the amount of shock shaft visible between the seal head and the spring perch when the suspension is at rest.

Compare your measurement to the factory specification in your owner's manual or service documentation. A significant difference between your measurement and factory spec confirms spring sag is the cause of your ride height loss.

How to Fix Lost Ride Height

Option 1 — Adjust Preload (Temporary Fix)

You can wind the preload collar on your shocks down to raise ride height — but this is a band-aid, not a fix. Increasing preload on sagged springs effectively stiffens the tender spring rate, harshening the ride. It also doesn't restore the spring's lost rate — just its height. You'll be winding the collar further and further down as the springs continue to sag.
