Why Your UTV Bottoms Out and How to Fix It | Schmidty Racing Suspensions
Why Does My UTV Keep Bottoming Out?
Few things are more jarring — or more damaging — than your UTV slamming into full suspension travel on a big hit. That harsh metallic clunk you feel through the entire chassis is your suspension bottoming out, and it's a sign that something in your setup isn't matched to how you ride.
The good news is that bottoming out is almost always fixable. Here are the most common causes and exactly how to address each one.
Cause 1 — Spring Rate Too Soft for Your Weight
This is the most common cause of bottoming, especially for heavier riders or vehicles with added accessories. Factory spring rates are designed for an average rider weight — typically around 180-200 pounds with no gear. If you're heavier than that, carry passengers regularly, or have added significant weight to your vehicle with a roof, cage, audio system, or spare tires, your factory springs are almost certainly too soft.
The Fix: A dual rate spring kit with spring rates selected for your actual weight. At Schmidty Racing Suspensions, we offer vehicle-specific dual rate spring kits for Can-Am, Polaris, and other major UTV platforms — with spring rates engineered for real-world rider weights, not factory averages.
Cause 2 — Saggy or Worn Factory Springs
Springs lose rate over time. Even if your factory spring rate was adequate when your UTV was new, springs that have seen thousands of miles of hard riding may have sagged significantly — losing both rate and ride height. A spring that's sagged even half an inch means your shock is starting deeper in its travel before you've even hit anything, leaving less travel available for actual impacts.
The Fix: Replace worn factory springs with a fresh dual rate spring kit. Every Schmidty Racing spring kit is backed by a lifetime warranty — because we stand behind the quality of springs we use.
Cause 3 — Insufficient Damping (Shock Needs Rebuilding or Tuning)
Springs control how much your suspension moves. Shocks control how fast it moves. If your shocks are worn, leaking, or low on nitrogen pressure, they may not be providing enough high-speed compression damping to slow the suspension down before it hits full travel. The result is a suspension that compresses too quickly and slams through its travel even when the spring rate is adequate.
The Fix: A shock rebuild restores oil and nitrogen to spec, recovering lost damping performance. If you're still bottoming after a rebuild with correct spring rates, a custom revalve to add high-speed compression damping may be the answer.
Cause 4 — Worn or Missing Bottom Out Bumpers
Every UTV shock has a bottom out bumper — a foam or rubber bumper that provides a progressive cushion as the shock approaches full compression. Over time these bumpers compress, tear, or disintegrate — and without them, the shock hits a hard metal stop at full travel instead of a progressive cushion.
The Fix: Inspect your bump stops every time you rebuild your shocks and replace them if they show wear. Schmidty Racing carries replacement bottom out bumpers for a wide range of UTV and ATV shock applications.
Cause 5 — Incorrect Ride Height or Preload Setting
If your ride height is set too low — either because your springs have sagged or your preload collars are wound down too far — your shock is starting its travel closer to full compression. This reduces the available travel before bottom out and makes the vehicle feel like it bottoms out even when spring rates are adequate.
The Fix: Check your ride height against manufacturer spec and adjust preload to restore correct ride height. If you can't achieve correct ride height with preload adjustment, your springs have sagged and need replacement.
The Complete Solution
In most cases, persistent bottoming is best addressed with a combination of a fresh dual rate spring kit and a shock rebuild — which together restore both spring rate and damping to correct spec. This combination dramatically improves bottom-out resistance, restores ride height, and transforms how the vehicle feels at speed.
