Why Your UTV Shocks Need Nitrogen
All reservoir-equipped UTV shocks contain pressurized nitrogen gas that serves two critical functions:
- Prevents cavitation — nitrogen pressure keeps the shock oil compressed and prevents it from foaming under hard use. Without adequate pressure, oil cavitates and damping performance disappears mid-ride.
- Provides IFP preload — on IFP (Internal Floating Piston) shocks, nitrogen pressure acts on the IFP to keep proper oil pressure throughout the shock stroke.
When nitrogen pressure drops below spec, your shocks lose damping performance — sometimes dramatically — even if seals are perfect and oil is fresh.
Why You Must Use Nitrogen — Never Compressed Air
This is the most important rule in shock charging — NEVER use compressed air in your shocks. Here's why:
- Moisture — compressed air contains water vapor that mixes with shock oil, causing emulsification and accelerated oil breakdown
- Oxygen — causes oxidation of shock oil and internal components over time
- Contamination — compressed air often contains oil mist and other contaminants from the compressor that contaminate your shock oil
Dry nitrogen is an inert gas that contains none of these contaminants. It's the only correct gas for charging UTV shocks.

- Fox 2.5 reservoir shocks: typically 150-200 PSI
- Fox 3.0 QS3 (Pro R, Turbo R): typically 200-250 PSI — check your specific model's Fox service guide
- Fox 3.0 IBP (Maverick R, X3 IBP): typically 200-250 PSI
- Walker Evans shocks: typically 200-250 PSI
- Fox Raptor shocks: check Fox's vehicle-specific service documentation
Important: These are general guidelines only. Always refer to your specific shock manufacturer's service documentation for the correct pressure specification. Using incorrect pressure — too high or too low — affects damping performance and can damage internal components over time.
How to Charge Your Shocks — Step by Step
- Connect your regulator to a nitrogen tank — ensure all connections are tight
- Set the regulator output pressure slightly above your target spec before connecting to the shock
- Connect the charging whip to your shock's Schrader valve
- Slowly open the regulator and allow nitrogen to flow into the shock
- Use the bleed-off valve to precisely release pressure to your exact target spec
- Disconnect the charging whip — there will be a small pressure release when you disconnect, which is normal
- Verify final pressure with a separate pressure gauge if desired
