Signs Your UTV Shocks Need Rebuilding | Schmidty Racing Suspensions
How Do You Know When Your UTV Shocks Need Rebuilding?
Your UTV's shocks work hard every ride — absorbing impacts, controlling body movement, and keeping your tires planted on the ground. Over time, the seals inside your shocks wear out, oil breaks down, and nitrogen pressure drops. When that happens, your ride quality suffers — and so does your safety.
The problem is that shock wear happens gradually. Most riders don't notice how bad their suspension has gotten until they ride a properly rebuilt machine and feel the difference. Here are the clearest signs your UTV shocks are overdue for a rebuild.
1. Visible Oil Leaking Down the Shock Body
This is the most obvious sign. If you see dark oil streaking down the outside of your shock body or reservoir hose, your shaft seal has failed. Once a seal starts leaking, oil level drops, nitrogen pressure drops, and damping performance deteriorates rapidly.
A small amount of oil film on the shaft is normal — that's lubrication. But any dripping, streaking, or pooling of oil means it's time for a rebuild immediately. Continuing to ride on a leaking shock accelerates internal wear and can damage the shaft itself.
2. Soft, Bouncy, or Wallowing Ride Quality
Does your UTV feel like it's floating over bumps instead of absorbing them? Do you feel like the suspension never quite settles after a hit? This is classic low-nitrogen or low-oil behavior. When nitrogen pressure drops, the shock loses its ability to resist cavitation — the oil foams up under hard use and the damping disappears.
This symptom often gets mistaken for a spring rate issue, but if your springs haven't changed and your ride suddenly feels mushier than it used to, the shocks are the first place to look.
3. Harsh, Choppy Ride Over Small Bumps
Counterintuitively, worn shocks can also feel harsh — not just soft. When shock oil breaks down and loses viscosity, the damping becomes inconsistent. You may feel every small rock and rut transmitting directly through the chassis while the shock still wallows over bigger hits. This inconsistent damping is a clear sign the oil has degraded and needs to be replaced.
4. Uneven Ride Height Side to Side
Park your UTV on a flat surface and look at it from the front and rear. If one side sits noticeably lower than the other and your spring preload is set evenly, a leaking or low-pressure shock on the low side is a likely culprit. Uneven ride height affects handling, steering feel, and can accelerate wear on other suspension components.
5. Excessive Body Roll in Corners
If your UTV leans dramatically in corners or feels unstable at speed, your shocks may no longer be providing adequate damping control. Worn shocks allow excessive body movement that compromises handling and can make the vehicle feel unpredictable — especially on off-camber terrain.
6. Clunking, Knocking, or Unusual Noises
Clunking sounds from your suspension under compression or rebound can indicate worn bushings, loose hardware, or in some cases internal shock damage. While not always shock-specific, any new noise from your suspension is worth investigating before your next ride.
7. More Than 40-50 Hours of Hard Riding
Even if your shocks show no visible symptoms, most manufacturers and suspension specialists recommend rebuilding UTV shocks every 40-50 hours of hard riding or once per season. Sand and dust accelerate seal wear significantly — if you ride at Glamis, Dumont, or St. Anthony, rebuild more frequently.
Preventive rebuilds are always cheaper than reactive ones. Catching seal wear early prevents shaft scoring, piston damage, and the much higher cost of replacing entire shock assemblies.
