UTV Suspension Is Confusing — Here's How to Stop Overthinking It
UTV Suspension Is Confusing — Here's the Simple Truth
If you've spent any time on UTV forums researching suspension upgrades, you've probably come away more confused than when you started. Springs vs shocks vs revalves. Tender rates vs main rates. Compression vs rebound. IBP vs QS3. Every rider has a different opinion and half of them contradict each other.
At Schmidty Racing Suspensions in Mesa, AZ, we talk to confused UTV owners every single day. Here's the simple truth that cuts through all the noise.
The One Thing That Matters Most
If you take nothing else from this guide, take this: spring rate selection matched to your actual weight is the single most important variable in UTV suspension.
Not brand. Not shock diameter. Not whether you have IBP or QS3. Not compression clicker settings. Not nitrogen pressure. All of those things matter — but none of them matter as much as having spring rates that are correct for your actual loaded riding weight.
A cheap spring kit with correct rates will outperform an expensive kit with wrong rates every single time.
Why Spring Rate Matters More Than Anything Else
Your springs support the weight of the vehicle and rider. Everything else — damping, valving, nitrogen pressure — controls how fast the suspension moves. But if the springs are wrong for your weight, the suspension is either constantly collapsing (too soft) or never moving (too stiff). No amount of damping adjustment fixes a fundamentally wrong spring rate.
Factory UTV springs are designed for a theoretical average rider at approximately 180-200 lbs with no accessories. If that's not you — and it's not most riders — your factory springs are wrong for your machine from day one.
The Simple Three-Step Process
Step 1 — Calculate Your Actual Riding Weight
Add up: your body weight plus gear, any passengers plus their gear, and all accessories permanently on your vehicle. This is your actual riding weight — and it's what drives spring rate selection.
Step 2 — Get the Right Spring Kit
Order a dual rate spring kit with rates matched to your actual riding weight. This single upgrade will give you roughly 80% of the maximum suspension improvement possible on your machine. Most riders are genuinely amazed at the transformation from correctly selected spring rates alone.
Step 3 — Check Your Shocks
If your shocks have significant hours on them or show oil leaks, rebuild them. Fresh seals and oil restore damping to factory spec and let your new spring rates actually work correctly. Browse our UTV shock rebuild seal kits or contact us about professional rebuild service.
What About Revalving?
Revalving — modifying the internal shim stack to change damping characteristics — is a genuine performance upgrade. But it's Step 4, not Step 1. Do springs and a rebuild first. Most riders find that correct spring rates combined with fresh shock oil and seals transforms their machine enough that revalving becomes optional rather than necessary.
If you want to revalve, do it alongside a spring kit so the damping can be matched to your new spring rates. Contact us at (602) 920-1337 to discuss a complete suspension package.
What About Shock Brands?
Fox vs Bilstein vs Walker Evans — brand matters, but less than most people think at the recreational riding level. A well-maintained Fox shock with correct spring rates will outperform a brand new premium shock with wrong spring rates. Get the rates right first, then worry about brand upgrades.
If you do want to upgrade shocks, our SRS Tuned Bilstein Blackhawk shocks are the ultimate platform — custom built and valved in-house for your specific machine and setup. But they're most impactful when paired with correct spring rates, which is why we always start with springs.
