SRS Tuned Bilstein Blackhawk UTV Shocks — The Complete Guide

SRS Tuned Bilstein Blackhawk UTV Shocks — The Ultimate Suspension Upgrade

If you're serious about your UTV's suspension performance, you've probably heard the name Bilstein Blackhawk. But you may not know what makes the SRS Tuned Bilstein Blackhawk from Schmidty Racing different from anything else on the market — or why riders who make the upgrade consistently say it's the single best thing they've ever done to their machine.

This is the complete guide to SRS Tuned Bilstein Blackhawk UTV shocks — what they are, how they work, what makes them unique, and whether they're right for your machine.

What Is the Bilstein Blackhawk?

The Bilstein Blackhawk is a coilover shock platform engineered specifically for high-performance off-road and UTV applications. Bilstein — a German engineering company with over 65 years of motorsport history — designed the Blackhawk platform from the ground up for the demands of high-performance off-road use.

Unlike Fox, Walker Evans, or other UTV shocks that are essentially adapted from existing shock families, the Bilstein Blackhawk was purpose-built for applications that demand exceptional heat management, consistent damping over long high-speed runs, and maximum adjustability — exactly what serious UTV desert and dune riders need.

What Makes SRS Tuned Bilstein Blackhawks Different

There are two words in "SRS Tuned Bilstein Blackhawk" that make all the difference: SRS Tuned.

Every set of Bilstein Blackhawk shocks that leaves Schmidty Racing is custom-built and valved in-house by our team specifically for your application. This is not an off-the-shelf shock with a Schmidty Racing sticker on it. This is a shock that has been disassembled, valved, assembled, and tested specifically for:

  • Your exact vehicle make and model
  • Your actual rider weight with gear and passengers
  • Your primary riding terrain — Arizona desert, sand dunes, mountain trails, or mixed use
  • Your riding style — from casual trail rider to aggressive high-speed desert runner

No other UTV shock available off the shelf gives you this level of customization. Shock Therapy, Fox Factory, and every other brand sells you a shock valved for a generic "average" rider. SRS Tuned Bilstein Blackhawks are valved specifically for you.

Bilstein Blackhawk Technology — What's Inside

ZoneControl Technology

The Bilstein Blackhawk features patented ZoneControl technology — 5 distinct damping zones built into the shock piston (3 compression, 2 rebound). This means the shock responds differently at different shaft velocities — soft and compliant at low shaft speeds for small bumps, progressively firmer at higher shaft speeds for big hits. Most conventional shocks use a single damping characteristic across all shaft velocities. ZoneControl gives you five.

Jounce Cut Off (JCO) — Built-In Hydraulic Bump Stop

One of the most unique features of the Bilstein Blackhawk is the built-in Jounce Cut Off system. The JCO acts as a hydraulic bump stop inside the shock body — providing progressive bottom-out resistance that increases dramatically as the shock approaches full travel.

Most UTVs rely on external foam or rubber bump stops to prevent harsh bottoming. The Blackhawk's integrated hydraulic JCO is far more sophisticated — it provides smooth, progressive resistance that absorbs energy rather than simply stopping suspension travel. The result is dramatically better bottom-out feel compared to any shock with external bump stops.

The JCO is also externally adjustable — you can tune when and how aggressively it engages for different conditions.

Rebound Cut Off (RCO)

The Rebound Cut Off system prevents the shock from extending too quickly at full droop — eliminating the need for external limit straps on most applications. The RCO keeps the suspension controlled and planted even at full extension, improving tire contact and handling in rough terrain.

4 External Adjustments

The Bilstein Blackhawk offers four external adjustment points — all accessible without tools:

  • High-speed compression
  • Low-speed compression
  • Rebound
  • JCO (Jounce Cut Off) engagement

This level of external adjustability lets you tune your suspension for different riding conditions — softer for technical trail riding, firmer for high-speed desert, more JCO for big dune faces — without tools and in minutes.

Finned Aluminum Reservoir

The Bilstein Blackhawk's finned aluminum reservoir dissipates heat dramatically better than standard smooth reservoirs. For long high-speed desert runs where shock oil temperature is a real performance factor, the finned reservoir keeps oil temperature consistent and damping performance stable throughout the run.

Who Should Upgrade to Bilstein Blackhawks?

SRS Tuned Bilstein Blackhawks are the right upgrade for riders who:

  • Want the absolute best suspension performance their machine is capable of
  • Are tired of generic off-the-shelf shocks that weren't tuned for their weight and terrain
  • Run their machine hard — desert racing, high-speed dune riding, or aggressive trail riding
  • Want a shock with more external adjustability than factory Fox units provide
  • Want bottom-out protection that is genuinely progressive rather than harsh
  • Plan to keep and invest in their machine long term

Bilstein Blackhawk vs Factory Fox Shocks

The most common question we get: "Are Bilstein Blackhawks worth the upgrade over my factory Fox shocks?"

The honest answer is: it depends on what you want. If you're a casual trail rider and your factory shocks are in good condition, a dual rate spring kit upgrade may give you more improvement per dollar spent. Spring kits are the best value-per-dollar suspension upgrade for most riders.

But if you ride hard, ride often, and want the absolute best performance your machine can deliver — SRS Tuned Bilstein Blackhawks are in a different league from factory Fox shocks. The custom valving alone transforms how the machine rides. The ZoneControl technology, built-in JCO, and 4-way external adjustment put the Blackhawk platform ahead of anything comparably priced in the UTV market.
