Ford Raptor Shock Rebuild — Complete Guide to Fox 2.5" Seal Kits and Rebuild Bundles

Ford Raptor Shock Rebuild — Everything You Need to Know

The Ford Raptor is one of the most capable off-road trucks ever built from the factory — and a huge part of that capability comes from its Fox shock absorbers. But like all shocks, Raptor Fox shocks need periodic rebuilding to maintain their performance. This guide covers everything you need to rebuild your Ford Raptor shocks correctly.

What Shocks Does the Ford Raptor Use?

Ford Raptor shock configurations vary by generation:

  • Gen 1 SVT Raptor (2010-2014) — Fox 2.0" IFP front shocks, Fox 2.0" IFP rear shocks
  • Gen 2 Raptor (2017-2020) — Fox 3.0" Live Valve front and rear shocks with internal bypass
  • Gen 3 Raptor (2021+) — Fox 3.0" Live Valve with updated internals
  • Raptor R (2023+) — Fox 3.0" with unique Raptor R-specific valving

Most DIY Raptor rebuilds focus on the Gen 1 SVT platform using Fox 2.5" aftermarket shocks — the most common upgrade path for first-gen Raptor owners. We carry seal kits and rebuild bundles for all of these configurations.

When Does a Ford Raptor Need a Shock Rebuild?

Ford Raptor shocks work hard. If you use your Raptor for off-road driving, high-speed desert running, or even aggressive street driving, your shocks are accumulating wear with every mile. Signs that a rebuild is due include:

  • Visible oil leaking down the shock body
  • Softer, bouncier ride than when the truck was new
  • Increased body roll in corners
  • Nose dive under braking
  • Rough, choppy feel over small road imperfections
  • More than 30,000-50,000 miles on original shocks
  • More than 2,000-3,000 miles of hard off-road use

Ford Raptor Shock Rebuild — Step by Step Overview

Here's a general overview of the Ford Raptor Fox shock rebuild process. Always consult the Fox service manual for your specific shock model before beginning:

  1. Remove shocks from vehicle — support the suspension and remove upper and lower shock mounting bolts
  2. Bleed nitrogen pressure — NEVER disassemble a shock with nitrogen pressure in it. Connect your regulator and slowly open the bleed valve until pressure is fully released
  3. Drain shock oil — remove the reservoir end cap and drain all old oil into a waste container
  4. Remove seal head — using your spanner wrench, unscrew the seal head from the shock body
  5. Remove shaft and piston assembly — carefully slide the shaft out and inspect for scoring or damage
  6. Clean all components — thoroughly clean the shock body, shaft, and all components with parts cleaner
  7. Install new seals — using your seal kit, install all new seals and o-rings. Lightly lubricate each seal with clean shock oil before installation
  8. Reassemble the shock — slide the shaft assembly back in, thread the seal head, and torque to spec
  9. Fill with fresh shock oil — fill to the manufacturer's specified volume
  10. Recharge with nitrogen — charge to the manufacturer's specified pressure using dry nitrogen only — never compressed air
  11. Reinstall and test — reinstall on the vehicle and take a slow test drive before returning to off-road use
